The Adidas adiPower Howard 2

Introduction

A jovial, fun loving big man with the intensity to dominate on the court, Dwight Howard is playing in his most stressful season of his career.  On the court, the numbers and play are there on a nightly basis, but the speculation regarding whether or not the Orlando Magic will be in his future has taken the spotlight.  This year, Howard began the season in one of our top performers – the adiPower Howard.  The new year sees a switch to one of the more anticipated releases in the Adidas basketball catalog.  Our First Look uncovers the quintessential big man shoe on the market – the Adidas adiPower Howard 2.

Part of the second half of the season signature releases for Adidas, the adiPower Howard 2 is the premiere big man shoe on the market today.  The features include the following:

  • Synthetic leather and SPRINTSKIN upper construction for light weight performance with excellent stability
  • Cushioning provided by Alive technology
  • TORSION® system plate for mid foot stability
  • Non-marking translucent rubber outsole
  • miCoach compatible

Aesthetics and Styling

Design wise, the aesthetics and styling are on par with what a big man shoe would look like.  Although the shoe was designed to keep a balance between weight and durability, there is nothing flimsy about the Howard 2.  The shoe is covered with leather sections and a sturdy SPRINTSKIN, with the Adidas three stripe logo acting as support beams for the center eyelets, much like the first Howard signature shoe, the BEAST Commander.  A cracked ice theme runs throughout, highlighted by the translucent outsole, which has the inset circular design seen on the Superbeast and adiPower Howard 1.  All of this is wrapped up with the new Dwight Howard logo, visible on the tongue.  This First Look features the Orlando Magic “Home” version of the adiPower Howard 2.

The quintessential big man shoe this year is the Adidas adiPower Howard 2

From a side profile, the adiPower Howard 2 definitely has a dominating look.  The Adidas stripe logo is planted solidly on the side over top a crackled ice designed upper.  A high mid cut and full leather toe box means stability and protection from front to back.  For the outsole, a translucent rubber section gives the appearance of cracked ice, complete with silver speckles for a nice style effect.  The front toe area forms a toe cap, molded with an arrow shaped pattern.  A signature touch finds “DWIGHT” on the lateral side of the toe cap, while a blue Adidas logo is placed the bottom, medial side.  Separating the toe cap from the translucent portion is a deep and thick arrow shaped flex groove.  As the main portion of the outsole, the translucent section is marked with circular insets, to provide a traction base with impact support.  On the heel and forefoot, the rubber creeps up forming more support, with a slight outrigger on the lateral side.  As a big man shoe, a large sculpted mid foot TORSTION® system plate solidifies the support, which also has the miCoach housing.  The final piece of the foundation is the thick midsole, which follows the contours of the outsole around the shoe.  At the heel a large portion of foam is added, with a mock Dwight Howard signature molded in.

Just like the outsole, the upper has a sturdy feel.  The toe box section is made up of synthetic leather, cutting across the throat line and extending from forefoot to forefoot on each side.  On the sides, the SPRINTSKIN construction is designed with a cracked ice pattern and very minute perforation holes.  This simple upper is finished off with the three stripe Adidas logo which serves as straps around the mid foot, much like the BEAST Commander.  Anchored at the mid foot, each logo strap corresponds with an eyelet, adding support all the way up to the collar.  The straps are also designed with the cracked ice pattern.

At the rear, a efficiently designed counter is found.  Above the thick midsole is a shiny stiff portion, which extends in a triangular shape on each side.  The shiny stiff portion is done with speckles to keep the ice theme intact.  Supporting the stiff portion is a synthetic leather underlay, stitched on, also in a triangular shape.  At the top of the heel is a patent leather flap, with perforation holes and an Adidas logo.  Moving up, the collar raises naturally, and is padded sufficiently, not too thick or too thin.  Inside, the lining is done with a textured synthetic to provide excellent hold and support.

Surprisingly, thin dual colored oval laces are equipped with the Howard 2.  The laces run smoothly through the nine eyelets, which are punctured through a leather eyestay.  A light weight mesh tongue has a nylon covering, with a patent leather patch on the top.  This patch is made with a lace holder, hang tag, and the new Dwight Howard “dh” logo printed on.  Rounding out the adiPower Howard 2 is the contoured PU insole, with an Adidas logo on the heel.

A First Look

The basketball shoe market has few tailor-made big men shoes available, leaving the Adidas adiPower series, this season, to lead the way.  Interestingly, versatile performance has been the trademark for each signature Howard release from the BEAST Commander to the adiPower Howard 1, as the series teeters between light weight performance, with enough stability for a true power game.  All the uncertainty surrounding the future of Howard has led to a more subdue release for the Howard 2, unlike the Rose 2.5.  Will the Howard 2 be one of the hidden gems of the season?  Our full Performance Review of the Adidas adiPower Howard 2 later this month will attempt to shed light on what should be one of the top performers of the year.
